Part-Time Carnivore?

Part-time Carnivore?

A new craze appears to be sweeping the “eco-friendly” world; reducing the amount of meat we eat to save CO2 emissions from methane (produced by animals). The website http://www.parttimecarnivore.org/ offers a guide on a few different ways to do this without cutting meat out completely.

One thing we would like to point out, is that many people turn to meat substitutes when they follow a more – or totally – vegetarian diet. This really is just food for thought, but consider the effects of, for example, tofu production on carbon emissions. Tofu is a common meat substitute, and many would not think twice when asked which was more environmentally friendly. Made from soy beans, tofu is NEVER farmed in the United Kingdom due to our weather conditions. Here is a fantastic article that details the effects of Tofu production, specifically with reference to the delicate Amazon rainforest. Factor in air miles, production costs and fuels, and the alleged halo glowing above the word “tofu” begins to slide…

Reducing meat consumption is an individual choice, but try instead to eat local meats with high animal welfare standards, or indeed to substitute it with local organic produce where possible.
